Week 4 – Super Cut-Down Day Bowl

Tom Brady is the GOAT!

Have to acknowledge a superstar when due. This was his 10th Super Bowl. He was the only quarterback to start a Super Bowl after age 40, and he did it three times. He was the oldest player to participate in a Super Bowl… at any position. The guy has more Lombardi trophies than any NFL franchise. Crazy.

Brady was the 7th of 11 other quarterbacks drafted in 2000. All the others have been out of the N.F.L. for at least nine years.

SHRAPNEL

Connor Hellebuyck is only 27 years old, but he’s just become the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise leader in wins with 153. Who did he pass?

Somewhere Ondrej Pavelec is wondering why he’s trending on twitter right now.

The Red Wings won on Sunday with Thomas Griess getting his first win for his new team. In fact, the last time a goalie other than Jonathan Bernier won a game for the Red Wings was Jimmy Howard back in Oct 2019 – 465 days ago.  Detroit has only won 15 games since then.

Think back to Halloween. Then think about the Halloween before that. That’s the last time someone other than Bernier won a game for the Red Wings.

THE WEEK IN BULLETS

  • Not a lot of moves on Cut-Down day aside from Vinny who filed some vet holes with the acquisitions of Kessel & Krecji
  • T-Man’s on top! A huge 53 point week helped him remain perfect with 12 wins & 1st place.
  • EZ was the only other team to go 3-0
  • BIG Movers: T-Man jumped from 3rd to 1st; EZ moved from 8th to 6th
  • Little movers: JBR, Stifler, & Team ORV all moved up one spot. JBR’s in the last $ spot.
  • Stifler used the pick-up to grab Josh Anderson from MTL
  • The week 4 pick-up goes to Rolphy

ORVRTIME

The Federal government just gave them $122 million in Covid relief, but Bell Media has decided that half of their viewers don’t like sports highlight shows anymore and have said goodbye to half of Jay & Dan, so Goodbye Dan! Also being cut was McCain Superfries neighbour Natasha Staniszewski (sp?) Complaints are pouring into to Bell Media; Short Lives Matter protesters along with the Union of Ukrainian Female Sportscasters have already planned marches. #SLM #UUFS

Two more TSN personalities were cut by Bell Media, Natasha and some other guy.

Goodbye Dan.

Week 14 – WJC Review & Bohemian Rhapsody

So we lost in the Quarterfinals. And if there any enduring memory for Canadians, it’s this,

Dobson has the open net, only to have his stick explode. If anyone should be getting evil tweets it should be stick manufacturer CCM!

Comtois got crapped on. He didn’t deserve it for failing on the penalty shot. But hopefully, he’ll grow out of the diving thing. Better to have a player call him out on it rather than some twit on twitter.

Thank you, TSN for not burying this quote. And if you don’t remember Neymar…

Now that’s a dive!

But Kostin saved his harshest criticism for Ren & Stimpy who traded him to Vinny. In the second clip below, he is seen voicing his displeasure to R&S.

Back to the NH Chel, Crosby gets some chirping from off the ice.

An example of these Good Chirps? “Hey Crosby! Derko never loved you!” and “You actually think you can help T-man?”

THE WEEK THAT WAS

  • T-Man had the big week with 52 points
  • T-Man, Fulty, & Orv went 3-0
  • Erty & Orv each move up one spot
  • Who’s Hot? T-Man 9-0; Erty 8-1
  • Who’s Not? Vinny 0-6; Stifler 1-11
  • Stifler used his pick-up to grab Colin Delia CH.
  • The pick-up for this week goes back to Ren & Stimpy as a 1 is rolled.

UNTIL NEXT WEEK…

The Golden Globe Awards were handed out Sunday night & congrats to the actor who portrayed Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Not only did he win “Best Actor,” the movie took “Best Picture.” Here you can see the audition tape that won him the role of Mercury.

Happy Birthday, Queen!

Week 22 – OFHL Trade Deadline

OFHL TRADE DEADLINE DAY

I wish TSN would forget about the 6 hour show and just break into their regularly scheduled shows with Mike Commodore letting players know it’s time to move on…

or this…

THE WEEK THAT WAS

  • Much like the NHL, any big trades happened a few weeks earlier, with only some late minor tweaks.
  • Derko lead the way again with 54.5 points
  • Also going 3-0 was Haukster
  • Orv finished with the 2nd lowest point total (28.25) but went 2-0 as JBR & eZ were both below him with 25.25.
  • If Orv had hit 30.75 pts he could have gone 3-0
  • Derko now sits 15 points up on Fulty with 3 weeks (9 games to go)
  • Derko’s magic number to clinch is now “2 ” as any combo of his wins and Fulty’s losses gives D the cup.
  • Derko was 12-0 in Feb. T-Man was 11-1, and Haukster was 9-3.
  • GoJo moved up one spot this week
  • JBR picked up D-Man Dermott TO.
  • This week is the final pick up of the and JBR gets it as well as a “6” was rolled.
  • Three weeks remaining in regular OFHL season. Then 2 weeks of playoffs for extra draft picks
  • Player of the week goes to MacKinnon CO, who came back with a vengeance for Derko as he notched 11 pts.

FROM THE VAULT

This is either Rangers goalie Dunc Wilson or Jason Voorhees after he moved to Mississippi. Either way, if I were a teenager, I’d stay away.

SHRAPNEL

Lots of Lucic hate going around Edmonton lately…

When he keeps putting Lucic on your wing

And this one after Lucic, who hadn’t scored in 27 games, is sent out as the extra attacker when pulling the goalie vs. Sharks.

Week 19 – Let the Games Begin!

Remembering the 1994 Olympics

The last time the men’s Olympic hockey tournament was played without NHLers, no one expected much from the birthplace of the game. Turns out, that was a mistake. Great read from Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi: PEOPLE CALL IT WHITE GOLD

Forsberg, Hirsch, Kariya, Renney et al.

THE WEEK THAT WAS

  • Derko does it again with a week’s high of 45.75 points
  • He goes 3-0 along with Haukster, T-Man, & Fulty
  • Derko stays 6 up on Fulty; Fulty stays 8 up on Haukster & Vinny
  • JBR’s MacDavid EDM is POTW with 8 pts
  • Not much movement this week as only Haukster moves; up one place to 3rd
  • R&S grab Roslovic WPG with the pick-up and get it again this week as a 1 was rolled
  • Derko & T-Man still own fax machines

Since Christmas:

  • Best Forwards: T-Man
  • Best Rookie: Haukster
  • Best Vet: Cordy
  • Best D: Fulty
  • Best Goalies: Vinny
  • Best Coach: Derko

Probably would have gone with Natasha as Loni Anderson, but Hedger is a good back-up.

Week 21 – Deadline Day

Do you like your rock music to be hard/country/bluesy/Canadiany? Me too. Give these Ontario boys a listen. Rolphy, can you get these guys for the Stampede?

RAMBLINGS

  • 5 weeks to go; Fulty and Cordy are tied for 1st in points, and only one player point apart – they’ll play each other twice more this season.
  • Cordy used a 10 point Sunday to jump past his 3 rivals for a 3-0 week
  • Also going 3-0: Fulty & JBR (gets his first 3-0 week)
  • Haukster jumped ahead of Vinny into 9th
  • Derko ties for the 2nd best week but goes 1-1-1
  • The last pick-up of the year goes to lottery. A “2” is rolled so it goes to Stifler

NHL trade deadline was this past Monday and it was largely uneventful, save for TSN’s Marty Biron taking out Jen Hedger with the T-Shirt cannon for the “Save of the Day.” Hi-lites?

  • Wilfred Laurier won the Prime Ministers’ Giant Head Race.
  • We now know everything about Sergei Plotnikoff. I mean EVERYTHING!
  • After starting 22-16-5, the Arizona Coyotes are 5-14-1 in 20 games since trading John Scott
  • Canucks owner Aquilini hates Stars Gagliardi so much he’d rather get nothing for Hamhuis than trade with his rival…. (kind of like some OFHL GMs)
  • Toronto was ecstatic about acquiring Brooks Laich…. Funny, a team that wants to get younger just traded for a guy who was once traded for Peter Bondra.

Caps sniper rocks the Rod Langway inspired mullet.

OFHL TRADE DEADLINE

Orv gets alot younger as he gets Nuge from Fulty who in turn gets a solid performer for the push this year in pre-vet Pavelski

Most notable was Derko dealing for goalies. He grabbed Anderson from Orv, Scrivens from Erty, and Hiller from Cordy (but that trade was rescinded after it was discovered he didn’t have a 17th rounder)

He tried to get Lundquist as well but Fulty wouldn’t allow it. Here, Henrik reacts to the news that he’s stuck on Team Fulty for the rest of the year.

WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY 2016

Getting excited? The jerseys were unveiled the other day.

world-cup-jerseys1

Czechs, Ruskies, Tre Kronor, & Suomi stayed with the tried and true; USA is bringin’ the shield, but the real interesting ones are:

  • Canada – Cannabis meets Plumber’s Crack
  • North America – Zelda meets V for Vendetta meets N.W.A. (and on black yet. Nice!)
  • Team Europe – Sponsored by Enron?

GET TO KNOW ME!

Time to get to know your OFHL Franchises. This week’s spotlight…. TEAM ROLPHY

  • 5th season of operation
  • 1st season: 2011-2012 (0.117 winning %) Instituted the “New Guy Brings all the Meat” clause.
  • Worst finish: 12th (last) his rookie season
  • Best finish: 4th in 2015 (0.608 %)
  • 1st ever draft pick: Miikka Kiprusoff CY, 8th overall 2011 draft
  • He traded his next pick to T-Man for J. Staal and a 3rd (Montoya NYI)
  • Highest picks: 2nd overall – Holtby WS in 2011, and Bennett CY in 2014
  • 1st pick-up: Justin Williams LA
  • Best late pick: Steen STL 11th rd, 2011 (still on roster) This was the only pick past rd 10 that Rolphy has ever made, other than his inaugural draft
  • Weirdest trade (EVER!) Denny’s Christmas Player Exchange 2013 – Rolphy gives up Cory Conacher who went on to register 26 more OFHL points; in return he got Brent Burns who has registered 200+ OFHL points since that trade. The week Rolphy got him, Burns registered 10 points.
  • OMAHA!

POTW

It’s a tie. Crosby is back on top with 9 points (helps when your team plays 5 games in the week) as is Chewbacca (Brent Burns)
